Course Description

Sports Cardiology will equip you with first-hand experience of cardiovascular evaluation of elite athletes, cardiac screening of athletes, managing athletes with heart disease, cardiac rehabilitation and emergency response planning in sport arenas. In addition, you will gain experience in the diagnosis and management of inherited cardiac conditions and clinical genetics.

Sports cardiology is a new but rapidly evolving subspecialty in cardiology. The Sports Cardiology Unit at St George’s NHS Foundation Trust is run by world-leading experts in this rapidly advancing area of medicine. This unique programme addresses the increasing demand for individuals with an in-depth knowledge of this discipline. The programme is delivered in collaboration with an internationally renowned consortium, giving you access to expertise limited to only a few centres around the world. The active involvement of key figures from sporting organisations facilitates innovative educational projects, enhancing your practical experience and cultivating your leadership skills.

The course offers access to state of the art equipment, cutting-edge research and top-level athletes. You will have the opportunity to gain a comprehensive range of expertise in Sports Cardiology and cement your practical skills for the evaluation of athletes of different demographics and sporting disciplines, as well as healthy sedentary young individuals and patients with heart disease.

Entry Requirements

If your native language is not English, you will need to provide evidence of your English language ability.    

English language tests are valid for only two years, as English language ability changes from year to year. If you've completed a test which is now considered out of date, you may be required to complete another, though applicants are only permitted a maximum of two test attempts within a one year period.

Assessment Methods

The assessment strategy comprises of formative and summative assessment, in which you will be provided with timely feedback to enhance the quality of your learning. Formative assessments will vary between modules to allow a variety of opportunities for you to demonstrate your learning. Summative assessments of all modules include written assignments or oral presentations. Summative assessments will help you to critically review published work, use appropriate experimental design and analyse data. It also enables you to develop scientific writing and presentation skills.

To be eligible for the full MSc award in Sports Cardiology, you must complete a research project in the form of a dissertation or an article based on conducted research submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, indexed in PubMed. In addition you will be required to perform an oral presentation of your work which will be critically appraised by examiners. You will be strongly encouraged to present your research at scientific conferences.
