Course Description
The School of Engineering and Applied Science and Aston Business School are building on their long track record of running postgraduate programmes in the engineering and business disciplines with the exciting MSc in IT Project Management. The programme is designed for students with a prior degree in computer science andor experience in software engineering who wish to develop their career further into project management. The graduates of this programme will be well prepared for the challenges of their industrial career as software project managers. The 10th annual CHAOS report (2004) from the Standish Group researching the reasons for IT project failure in the United States indicated that project success rates had increased to 34% of all projects (an increase of 100% since 1994) while failure rates had declined from 31% to 15%. Clearly, there is plenty of scope for improving these figures. Software project failure can be devastating for an organisation: it can lead to death and injury in safety critical systems, or the financial collapse of an organisation. Project management skills are increasingly being recognised as crucial for the success of IT projects: even in projects where the cause of failure is a technical issue, better project management and development processes would have identified the problems before the system entered service. The academic staff involved in this MSc programme are recognised internationally for excellence in research and also have strong links with industry. Computer Science has EPSRC industrial CASE studentships in a wide range of application domains, such as reliability assessment, health informatics, and computer aided design. Aston Business School in partnership with Warwick Business School and Birmingham University are working on an innovative Engaging Research for Business Transformation (EREBUS) project with the overall aim to help public and private sector organisations compete effectively in an ever-changing global market place. This MSc is designed to equip its graduates with both generic project management and specific software project management skills, which will allow them to embark on a career managing successful software projects. Applicants will also need to demonstrate English language ability (e.g. IELTS 7.0, TOEFL score of 620 or equivalent).
