Overview

Aston University is a public research university situated in the city centre of Birmingham, England. Aston began as the Birmingham Municipal Technical School in 1895, evolving into the UK's first College of Advanced Technology in 1956.  Aston University received its royal charter from Queen Elizabeth II on 22 April 1966.

In 2017, Aston received recognition by Times Higher Education for the second-best teaching quality in the UK. For 2018, it was ranked in the top 55 universities in the UK by all major domestic and international league tables. Aston was ranked by QS as the 42nd best university in the world under 50 years old in 2015.

Founded in 1895 and a University since 1966, Aston is a long established research-led University known for its world-class teaching quality and strong links to industry, government and commerce. Professor Julia King became Vice-Chancellor of the University in 2006. Aston University is based in the centre of Birmingham, home to over 65,000 students and one of Europe liveliest and most welcoming cities. Our friendly and safe 40 acre campus houses all the University's academic, social and accommodation facilities for our 9,500 students. Aston offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, and also works with the public and private sector to develop tailored Continuing Professional Development and Foundation Degree programmes.
