The Drive Prep School is a family run, co-educational school that opened fifteen years ago and now operates on two sites in The Drive, Hove.The main building was originally a large family house and although it has now been considerably extended we have maintained the sense of being at home. This has been achieved by simply asking ourselves each time a decision has been made, whether we would like to live with this in our home, and if not then we look for an alternative. – which is why our school doesn't feel like a traditional school and one of the reasons why it is a place where a child would be happy to spend a large part of their time. We have therefore endeavoured to create an environment in which everyone involved, pupils, staff and parents, feel at ease with their surroundings and with their social interactions. Our aim has always been to provide a diverse education which goes beyond academic success and enables students to have confidence in all areas of life. We want our children to respect and care for their environment and the community and to be aware of action we can take to make a better world. We aim to stretch them intellectually, physically and artistically by offering an exciting timetable inclusive of Music, Drama, Art, Ecology and Sport, all supported by excellent staff. The teachers know every child in the school as an individual and are able to make provisions for their needs and talents and make themselves available for conversation and interaction outside the lessons.Throughout the year there are projects in which the whole school participates; school concert, Christmas play, summer fete etc where the children get the opportunity to work with different age groups and staff. Parents find that the class teachers and Head teacher are readily accessible for discussion and swift resolution of any problems that may arise. The morale among our students is high. Attitudes towards school are positive and incidents of negative behaviour are few and far between. Students learn how to handle interpersonal relationships and there should be no persistent reasons for unhappiness, such as bullying for example. When needed, a staff member is always within reach. The relatively small size of The Drive Prep School makes it far more manageable than a traditionally sized school, with the result that there are no bureaucratic layers and a minimum of red tape. It also means that timetable alterations can be made with relative ease, and we can swiftly organise interesting events such as talks by visiting speakers, theatrical performances, Science and Geography field trips etc. It is also easier for us to implement new ideas. We have now moved nearly all of our administrative, recording, reporting and scheduling activities online. Each student has their own account on our Virtual Learning Environment where resources are made available, information disseminated, and homework and project work is set, worked on, and marked.
