In that year it set up the research centre which is now known as the Centre for Manuscript and Print Studies. Since then it has grown to the point where it now runs around twenty research seminar series and up to twenty conferences a year, as well as five major externally funded research programmes and two Masters degrees. In recent years it has hosted an increasing number of major international conferences including, in 2006 Esse 8 for 650 members of the European Society for the study of English. The Chair of its Advisory Council is Professor David McKitterick FBA ( Trinity College, Cambridge ).The Institute's activities attract those interested in the English language and its literatures (including other national, and international literatures in English), in the History of the Book, and in cognate fields of study. It co-ordinates a substantial amount of interdisciplinary and inter-Institute activity within the School of Advanced Study .
