Course Description
The Urology MSc at UCL offers a clinical theory, science and research-orientated programme of teaching which aims to give an understanding of the scientific basis of the specialty, the importance of laboratory research, and the use of research methods and how to apply them. What and how will I learn? Students on the programme learn the scientific basis of clinical urology, the importance and nature of research methods used to acquire fundamental knowledge of the subject, research skills which enable scientists to carry out basic research, critical evaluation of scientific literature, and theoretical clinical urology to FRCS(Urol) standard. Degree Structure Students undertake courses to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight core courses (120 credits) and a research project (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, flexible study 1-5 years) is offered. Core Modules Basic Science in Urology (Embryology, Anatomy, Physiology) Research Methodology and Statistics in Urology Urological Oncology BPH and Bladder Dysfunction Gynaecological Aspects of Urology Urological Imaging and Calculi Emergency and Paediatric Urology Andrology and UTI Dissertationreport All MSc students complete a research project, which is ideally carried out in UCLUCLH with a UCL supervisor but may be undertaken in the students local working environment (subject to approval). Options All courses are compulsory. Assessment is through formal presentation, oral examination, unseen written examination (MCQ), viva voce examination and the research dissertation. Why should I study this degree at UCL? Some clinical experience in Urology is also desirable. How to apply The deadline for applications is 31 July for the year of entry. Students are advised to apply as early as possible due to competition for places. Those applying for scholarship funding (particularly overseas applicants) should take note of application deadlines. Who can apply? The programme will be particularly suitable for trainees from the UK or overseas who wish to obtain a higher degree in Urology but do not have the time or the opportunity to undertake a project suitable for an MD (Res) thesis. Entry Requirements
A UK medical degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, MRCS, or equivalent is required. Some clinical experience in Urology is also desirable.
