Certificate Of Higher Education , Social Anthropology

Course Description

Social anthropology raises questions about people, societies and cultures, not only 'other' societies but also our own lives and our engagement with other places, cultures and people. On this course, you'll explore global questions of power and resources, as well as anthropological perspectives on gender, material culture, identity, religion and culture. This course provides valuable insights, particularly for people working in health, education, development and policy-making.

Course Content

To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete four modules worth a total of 120 credit points. You are advised to take the modules in the order shown.

MODULE 1

  • Introductions: Understanding the Social World

MODULE 2

  • Doing Anthropology

MODULE 3

  • Ways of Seeing

MODULE 4

  • Material Culture, Consumption and the Construction of Self

Please note: you may be exempt from Module 1 if you already have a degree, and you may instead take an option module from the Certificate of Higher Education in Development Studies.

The exemption will be granted on a case-by-case basis with the approval of the Programme Director and must be from the options listed.

Entry Requirements

None. However, all modules are taught at university level and you should be able to read, write and speak English fluently. If you need help, we offer a range of academic English and language development modules.

VISA REQUIREMENTS

If you are not from the European Economic Area (EEA) and/or Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa.

The visa you apply for varies according to the length of your course:

  • Courses of more than six months' duration.
  • Courses of less than six months' duration.
  • Pre-sessional English language courses.

International students who require a Tier 4 visa should apply for our full-time courses (with the exception of modular enrolment certificates of higher education and graduate certificates), as these qualify for Tier 4 sponsorship. If you are living in the UK on a Tier 4 visa, you will not be eligible to enrol as a student on Birkbeck's part-time courses (with the exception of some modules).
