Course Description
This MA prepares you for a career in the challenging world of publishing. Taught by experts and practitioners and with master classes from industry leaders, the programme of study includes all the knowledge, skills and understanding you need to become a successful publisher, including a period of professional placement. What and how will I learn? The programme equips students with both a practical insight into how this complex industry functions and a range of transferable skills. These include editorial, sales and marketing skills, publishing business plans and their successful delivery, contract negotiation and copyright management, electronic publishing and new media, global publishing, export and licensing. Degree Structure Students undertake courses to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight core courses (120 credits), research dissertation (60 credits) and a five week practical placement for full-time students. A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time nine months or flexible study 2-5 years) is offered. Core Modules Electronic Publishing Publishing, Culture and Society The Publishing Business Publishing Skills I Publishing Skills II Publishing Law The Publishing Process Journal and Periodical Publishing Dissertationreport All MA students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words. Options All courses are compulsory. An essential component of the course is the five week placement in a publishing house. Assessment is through essays, presentations, reports, one unseen examination, and the dissertation.
