Course Description

THIS MBA AIMS TO DEVELOP YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS AS A MANAGER, AND SPECIFICALLY THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED IN MANAGING HOSPITALITY ORGANISATIONS SUCH AS HOTELS, RESTAURANTS, AND CONTRACT CATERERS. This course will attract managers in the hospitality industry who wish to update their qualifications, or managers looking for a career change who want to enter the hospitality industry. It focuses on developing the management skills and knowledge you will need in this expanding and constantly changing business sector. The course specifically aims to deepen your knowledge and ability to strategically manage hospitality operations and supplements this with an introduction to other key management disciplines. The course will engage you in conceptual thinking, analysis and research, however it seeks to take you beyond the analytical emphasis of many MBA programmes and encourages you to develop and implement creative ideas and solutions to organisational issues. Structure: The course is modular and can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis. It is available by attendance at QMU or by open learning. You are required to study eight modules each valued at 15 credits and complete a Master?s dissertation (valued at 60 credits). Studying full-time, you will normally undertake four modules in semester one and four modules in semester two, and then complete the Master?s project (MBA only). Course Covers - Contemporary issues in the hospitality industry - Research methods for business - Managing service industries, organisations and people - Marketing - Accounting and finance for service industries - Operations management - Strategic management - Creative manager Plus - Masters project (MBA only) Teaching and Assessment: Learning and teaching methods for students studying at Queen Margaret University encourage group and independent learning. You may also have lectures from industry professionals and visits to industry. Students studying by distance learning are expected to participate in on-line discussions though WebCT. Assessment methods include management reports, essays, and presentations. Careers: This award is aimed at current and prospective managers in the hospitality industry. Your future prospects will depend on your abilities and previous experience, but successful completion of the course should better equip you for the fast-changing and diverse business environment in this sector. Associate Student: You can also register as an associate student to study single modules in areas of interest.
