Course Description

This continuing professional development programme aims to enhance experienced counsellors' theoretical, research- and practice-based knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in order to incorporate it into their own therapeutic work, and to enable them to progress to further postgraduate study within the Counselling and Psychotherapy Programme. The programme consists of three 20-credit modules at HE Level M. Applicants should normally hold a degree or equivalent, and be qualified and experienced counsellors who have already undertaken substantial training in counselling in a model other than CBT. They should ideally be BACP accredited or UKCP registered, or eligible to apply for professional accreditation. All students will need access to a computer and the internet. The course will be available Leicester as 15 taught days (6 x 23 day blocks). MODULE ONE Offers an introduction to the principles and practices of CBT, focusing in particular on its use for treating forms of anxiety and depression, and in working with clients with low self-esteem. - Principles of CBT. - Case Conceptualisation. - Negative Automatic Thoughts. - Assumptions. - Depression. - Anxiety and social anxiety. - Low self-esteem. - Skills development. - Research evidence of CBT efficacy. MODULE TWO Extends students' understanding of CBT principles and practices by exploring the ways in which they can be adapted to fit specific clinical diagnoses. Students are introduced to the DSM-IV diagnostic system, and will also learn about CBt interventions for social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder. - Introduction to the DSM-IV diagnostic system. - Working with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. - Working with Social Phobia. - CBT Strategies and Techniques. - Developing Treatment Plans. - Schema Focus. - Case Presentation. - Skills Development. - Research evidence of CBT efficacy. MODULE THREE Further extends students' understanding of CBT principles and practice by considering CBt interventions for personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. This module also aims to introduce students to recent innovations in CBT theory and practice including the use of imagery and metacognitive interventions. - Working with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). - Working with Personality Disorders. - CBT Strategies and Techniques. - Developing Treatment Plans. - Working with Schema. - New Approaches in CBT, eg Working with Imagery, Metacognitive Interventions. - Research Evidence of CBT Efficacy. ASSESSMENT Module 1: 3000 word essay & 1000 word reflective learning journal. Module 2: 3000 word essay & 1000 word reflective learning journal. Module 3: 3000 word critique of a counselling session using CBT techniques & 1000 word reflective learning journal. WHERE AND WHEN DOES THE COURSE TAKE PLACE? The course will be held at Vaughan College, Leicester, as 15 taught days (6 x 23 day blocks).
