Course Description

The programme has been established for over 15 years and more than 200 students from ten different countries have now graduated from it. The programme is organised by the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (IOEM) at the University of Birmingham. It is designed to meet the needs of postgraduate training in the prevention and control of work-related ill health and to understand the issues of ill health and its effect on work in the 21st century. It is open to graduates with relevant first degrees and those with appropriate work experience. This includes doctors, nurses, hygienists, and health and safety personnel. Course content The course focuses on key current issues including occupational ergonomics, fitness for work, exposure assessment, mental health, health promotion, legal aspects and risk management. Since it?s inception in 1986 the course has been attended by doctors, nurses, toxicologists, ergonomists, occupational hygienists, engineers and professional health safety consultants. Recent course graduates are from the UK, Bahrain, Greece, Ghana, Russia, Nigeria, and Kuwait. Why study this course? This course is run by the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (IOEM) at the University of Birmingham which is a World Health Organisation collaborating centre for Occupational Health and is recognized internationally for its training and research. The IOEM has been running academic and professionals courses in Occupational Health for over 20 years. This course is accredited by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) and the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) for graduate membership. It is also recognised by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM). Duration of study ? Flexibility in mind We understand the pressures of juggling your work and home life and therefore this programme is offered on a flexible basis. You can study the MSc as a full-time one year programme, or on a part-time basis over two years. If you are unable to commit to the full MSc, you can also choose to take the shorter qualification of Postgraduate Diploma. Individual modules may also be available as short study sessions which can be taken with or without the assessment. Credits gained from assessed modules can then be used towards a full qualification if required at a later stage.
