Course Description
The MMus provides advanced training in musicology, composition and performance practice and includes elements of research and subject training. It may be viewed as either a self-contained degree or as preparation for a PhD. It provides advanced training in several pathways composition, musicology and performance practice, and offers a number of options to suit a wide variety of interests. You will take one or more compulsory ?Research Training? modules and will select one or more ?Subject? modules to a total of 60 credits: Research Training modules Information Skills and resources in Music (10 credits) Musicology in practice (10 credits) Thinking About Music (20 credits) Subject modules (20 credits each) Composition pathway ? modules in acoustic and electroacoustic resources (including aspects of notation and sound processing) are available, many of which include practical work with the Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre, the New Music Ensemble and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group in workshop and concert situations. Musicology and Performance Practice pathways ? we offer modules on advanced techniques for acquiring information on music and music history, new approaches to thinking and writing about music, and editorial skills, as well as on periods and genres covered by staff specialisms. Language training is also available. At the end of the period of study, you will then submit ONE of the following (all worth 120 credits): A Thesis of 20,000 words. An Edition of music, with introduction and critical commentary, equivalent in substance to a thesis of 20,000 words. A Portfolio of Compositions in which the group pieces should together have a playing time of approximately 30 minutes, accompanied by a written commentary. A portfolio of Compositions of approximately 20 minutes in duration, and a critical study of 10,000 words. An exercise in Performance, to include a recital of 30 minutes? duration, and a written submission of 12,000 words.
