Course Description

The MSc in Occupational Health Psychology focuses on people at work, their health, wellbeing, safety and performance. It aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to ?make a difference? by improving working life. It is a new and fast developing field. This is the first MSc course in the world devoted to the study of the psychological, social and management issues involved in occupational health. It is about how we can better design and manage work organisations to protect and promote employee health and employee safety. This course is highly suitable for students wishing to work in the management of workplace health and wellbeing, or safety management, or Human Resource management, whether as an advisor and consultant to governments or to companies. Past students have been successfully employed in these roles all over the world. They have also become educators and trainers, researchers and policy-makers. The MSc is structured around 10 modules. They cover, for example, the causes and consequences of common mental health problems in the workplace (particularly work stress), sickness absence, work-life-balance, ergonomics, behaviour change and health promotion, the management of chronic health conditions, and diversity the effect of the physical work environment on health (eg. noise, light): the ageing population and migrant workers. They also explore the context to work, looking at employers? legal responsibilities for healthy working conditions, leadership, corporate social responsibility, organisational change and development, and much more. The emphasis throughout is on understanding the issues and preventing problems. Students will also be trained in research skills: how to gather information and data, conduct interviews, how to design a survey and analyse the results. They will attend workshops on developing their own careers and develop their own interests, and to produce assignments in areas of their own choice on certain modules. The final module offers an opportunity to conduct a research project. Students who do not wish to conduct their own research project can study for the Diploma in Occupational Health Psychology this is otherwise identical in content. The majority of teaching staff belong to the Centre a research centre within the Institute that is a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Occupational Health. Staff have an international an international reputation for research in their areas of expertise, and publish widely in journals, books and professional publications. They have advised the World Health Organisation, International Labour Organisation and the European Commission. All teaching takes place in state-of-the-art facilities on the award-winning Jubilee Campus.
