Course Description
Overview This course provides the knowledge and skills required to acquire and develop a thorough technical and theoretical understanding of audio engineering. It offers sound engineers the opportunity to create and test music-driven audio processing tools. Exploring analogue and digital technology, learning will be anchored in ?real world? applications. Focusing on vocational and practical skills directly relevant to industry, students will use contemporary tools, techniques and models for product and systems development, as well as developing the academic rigour required for postgraduate study resulting in a research-based project. The course is designed to give you an excellent background for a professional career or to enable students to undertake further study leading to the specialisation needed for a research career. This MSc course will also be suitable for graduates of sound related courses who have worked for several years and wish to update their knowledge. Key Facts * This course is designed to meet the increasing demand for well qualified Sound Engineers in this competitive industry which includes radio, film, television, theatre, multi-media environments, the growing UK Games industry, and live events. * This course is run from the School of Digital Media Technology which has strong existing links with professional partners and communities, both regionally and nationally. The School is also accredited by the Skillset Academy, the sector skills council for the Media Industry. Course Structure Modules in the first semester introduce you to the ethos of course and it will cover the exploration and testing of both software and hardware grounded in their application in the recording studio environment. You will explore digital audio programming and the research and design of audio systems in the context of the realisation of mastered sound recordings. More advanced units in the second semester will allow you to create and test plug-in designs and develop the artefacts explored in the area of audio systems. The second semester also allows you to focus in one particular area, perhaps plug-in design or recording and to develop a portfolio of artefacts. The development of research skills is enhanced at this stage in preparation for the final dissertation, providing them with the opportunity to become more familiar within a particular area of expertise. Assessments A range of assessment methods are used during the course, including continuous assessment, project work, laboratory exercises and examinations. Further Studies The university can offer opportunities for postgraduate research (MPhil and PhD programmes). Employment Opportunities Successful completion of the course can lead to the following careers: * Recording industry: mixing, programming. * Broadcasting: mixing, production, sound editing. * Film industry: location recording, dubbing. * Multimedia games: soundtrack creation, special effects. * Manufacturing: product development.
