Course Description

This programme enables students to combine advanced-level training in sociology and social policy. It offers greater flexibility than the PG DipMSc Social Policy and Social Research or the MSc Sociology and Social Research in terms of choice of modules, including the balance between quantitative and qualitative methods. The programme will provide you with a thorough grounding in both sociological and social policy analysis through two of the core modules (Understanding modernity and Key debates in social policy) with the option of pursuing further areas of debates in either sociology or social policy (Understanding social changes and The mixed economy of welfare delivery). Core modules: Key debates in social policy The mixed economy of welfare delivery Understanding modernity Understanding social change The design and statistical analysis of surveys Qualitative methods Philosophy, methodology and research design Project 1 and Project 2 (to be chosen from a range of options). Plus a dissertation. In addition to the taught modules on the programme you will be required to participate in a series of half-day faculty workshops during the course of semesters 1 and 2. These workshops will cover issues of bibliographic skills and library use ethical and legal issues in social research writing, dissemination and media skills research management and team-working skills and personal and career development. While these workshops do not have associated formal assessment, much of the material covered will be assessed in the context of the units which constitute the formal part of the teaching programme.
