Course Description

What you study ? This is a onetwo calendar year part time programme designed specifically for students who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (with registration) in adult or mental health nursing at the University of Leeds who wish to develop further and continue their academic development to MSc. Use will be made of existing modules within the School to faciliate student integration, sharing of knowledge and resource efficiency. The students will build on learning that has taken place and the route will particularly provide a developmental continuum from the Evidence-Based Practice module (HECS5002M) undertaken in the Postgraduate Diploma. This will be facilitated by he students undertaking a research methods module, focused on the skills and knowledge to underpin proposal development and a dissertation module. These modules also provide sufficient flexibility for the students to develop their own area of professional and clinical interest. This pathway will form an integral but optional route for students who have been awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing with Registration at the Universtiy of Leeds. It is intended to be programme specific and would not be an additional rout for students from other programme or other universities. This is to comply with the University's regulations of only permitting the transfer of up to 25% of module credit from another institution. Learning and assessment? Teaching is by lectures, practical classes, tutorials, seminars and supervised research projects. Extensive use is made of IT and a wide range of materials is available to enable students to study at their own pace and in their own time to enhance and extend the material taught formally. Assessment is by course work and written exams which take place at the end of the semester in which the module is taught. Results obtained in the second and final years contribute to the final degree classification. The programme will provide you with: - An opportunity to gain and develop a vast range of theoretical nursing knowledge and practical skills through taught sessions and attendance in clinical practice. - Access to a wide range of different clinical specialisms including hospital and community placements. - A work based learning focus with assessment methods linked to your practice and your work. - Flexibility within the modules for you to develop your knowledge and skills in those areas of practice most appropriate to the work environment - Support in meeting the NMC requirements for entry to the professional register - Opportunities to learn with other healthcare professionals - An opportunity to develop research skills and carry out a dissertation project related to nursing practice
