Course Description
Aimed at graduates in non-business subjects, this course develops existing knowledge and skills, and focuses them towards the commercial environment. Focusing on the unique importance of marketing to any organisation - private or public sector - students gain a sound grasp of the principles of marketing and consumer behaviour, whether the consumer is an individual or an organisation. They also gain an insight into the business and social environment in which organisations operate, as well as the technical and personal skills necessary to pursue a career in marketing. Alongside the academic content, students are given the opportunity to develop and refine a number of important communication and interpersonal skills. Core Content: Issues and Concepts in Marketing and Management, Firms and Industries, Business Finance for Marketing, Marketing Management, Marketing Research, Buyer Behaviour, Tools for Research in Marketing, Strategic Management, Integrated Marketing Communications, International Marketing. Elective Classes: Marketing of Services, Current Issues in Marketing, Multivariate Methods in Marketing Research, Retail Marketing Management, Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, Innovation and New Product Development, Social Marketing. Applied Marketing Projects give students the opportunity to tackle a marketing problem experienced by an organisation in Scotland, allowing them to implement the theoretical elements of the programme in a dynamic and innovative way. As a 'real life' situation, the project gives practical work experience and, at the same time, provides client organisations with useful marketing advice based on primary market research. Dissertation : The dissertation enables students to study a specific marketing problem in-depth. Work involves desk research and literature surveys, as well as case studies of individual companies or small-scale primary research projects, providing scope for some originality of thought, research, and presentation. Note: The Department cannot guarantee that all the electives will be available in any given year. Progress to the MSc depends on performance in the examinations and coursework. Diploma-registered students who achieve the requisite standard may transfer to the Masters programme Masters-registered students who do not reach the requisite standard will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma.
