Course Description
MSc in Soil Mechanics MSc in Soil Mechanics & Business Management MSc in Soil Mechanics & Sustainable Development MSc in Soil Mechanics & Engineering Seismology MSc in Soil Mechanics & Environmental Geotechnics (The add-on of business management or sustainable development modules represents about 25 per cent of the taught material). Five Soil Mechanics MSc courses explore the properties of soils and soft rocks in relation to civil engineering the theory of geomechanics and practical geotechnical engineering. The courses share a core of nine topics covering fundamental and applied soil mechanics. Lectures are given by staff from the Department of Civil Engineering, with additional lectures are given by visiting professors and other experts from industry. The Soil Mechanics courses comprise a full programme of lectures, laboratory classes and tutorials involving 400 contact hours spread over two terms. Following a revision period and examinations, a 15-week individual research period is undertaken culminating in a formal dissertation. Students also develop their team working, presentational and IT skills in projects, laboratory practical classes, hands-on numerical analysis and geophysical sessions and informal colloquia. Four field courses are also organised in Kent, the Bristol area, southern Europe and Berkshire. All students must have appropriate degrees, most have practical experience in geotechnics and many come from overseas. Full funding (fees and subsistence) is available for appropriate students through an industrial bursary fund. Details are available from the Course Director. Full-time students complete the course over one calendar year, while part-time students have a one-year interval between the first and second taught terms to work on their dissertations.Students also attend a series of special case history lectures that are given by visiting experts from outside Imperial College.
