This advanced course -- commencing in the academic year 2011-12 -- is designed for students with an undergraduate degree in anthropology or a related discipline who would like to prepare for a career in science (for example, anthropology and biology) or in health professions including advanced entry to medical school. The programme provides students with an integrated, inter-disciplinary and comprehensive training in evolutionary medicine covering the following: Evolutionary theory and applications Historical background and current literature in evolutionary medicine Theoretical and practical contributions of evolutionary medicine Current debates and controversies. Durham's MSc in Evolutionary Medicine is a multi-disciplinary degree and is the only master's degree in this topic anywhere in the world. It is based within the Department of Anthropology, but includes teaching and supervision from staff in biological sciences, archaeology, psychology, and the School for Medicine and Health as well as invited specialists from other universities. Students take three core courses which includes writing a specialised dissertation tailored to their particular interests plus up to four further options, equating to 60 credits, from a range of multi-disciplinary topics Staff at Durham University cover several themes in evolutionary medicine including mismatch between the environment in which humans evolved and the contemporary environment (e.g., risks for obesity and other metabolic disorders, reproductive function, sleep disorders, mother-infant interactions), co-evolution of host and pathogen (infectious diseases), and modelling of cultural behaviours that impact health.
