Course Description
Taught by leading researchers from Theoretical & Applied Linguistics, The Centre for Speech Technology Research and the School of Informatics, combining elements of linguistics, computer science, engineering and psychology, this truly diverse programme brings together students from the many different disciplines needed to address current issues in the field of speech and language technologies. Learning Outcomes Students acquire the knowledge and develop the skills needed to address current issues in speech and language technology, learning about state of the art techniques in speech synthesis, speech recognition, natural language processing, dialogue and language generation. Students learn the theory behind such technologies and gain the practical experience of working with and developing real systems based on these technologies. Programme Aim This programme aims to equip students with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to carry out research and development in the challenging interdisciplinary arena of speech and language technology. Facilities & Resources State of the art teaching and research facilities include specialised speech and language orientated computer labs, a digital recording studio and perception labs. Career Prospects Graduates from this programme have a significant career advantage over people with only undergraduate level degrees. The skills leant through this programme make graduates employable in a wide range of related fields. Previous graduates from this programme have accepted positions in industry, others have continued their study and completed PhD's, and a few have even started their own companies. Graduates from this programme can typically enter industry at a higher level, and progress faster, than people without a specialist Masters degree. This Masters will also significantly improve one's chances of obtaining a PhD place in a related field. Learning Process Students take 2 semesters of taught courses, combining a set of core subjects with a wide choice of option. This is followed by a project and dissertation, where the student carries out their own piece of original research.
