Course Description

Midwives are responsible and accountable professionals who are involved in all aspects of maternity care. They promote and optimize health whilst ensuring the best experience for women and their families and are the lead professional for low risk women. Their scientific knowledge along with thier comprehensive understanding of the sociological and psychological aspects of child birth support women globally in every social level and every environment. Essential attributes of a midwife include excellent communication skills, high ethical and moral standards and the ability to adapt to a range of situations and ways of working. These are essential for the delivery of sensitive care in a wide variety of settings. They are advocates for the women in their care and remain central to any community and any health care team. The programme will be based on the core areas of midwifery and you will study subject matter relating to these throughout the programme. Global Discovery Learning principles will be embedded in the learning strategies and will be used as the basis for promoting learning. This model will be supplemented by lectures, inquiry seminars and at points within the curriculum where a more knowledge based format will be used. The programme will also contain aspects of theory, professional practice and support for the critical inquiry that culminates in the preparation and presentation of a research project. The clinical component will be integrated into the programme and you will have the opportunity to consolidate what you learn at university under the supervision of an experienced midwifery mentor. You will also be expected to integrate what you learn during the clinical placements into the university based modules where you will be sharing this learning with the rest of the cohort and this will contribute towards your award. Research skills and evidence based practice underpin the programme. Your teaching will be guided by world leading research to give you the best informed start in your future career, enabling you to make complex decisions, evaluate practice, co-ordinate care and be an advocate for women and their families. Through the use of advanced scholarly thinking you will be in a strong position to promote progress in your professional practice. This will enable you to be proactive in appraising practice, generating research proposals and evaluating the efficacy of your practice to improve care and outcomes for women, babies and families. You will have the scope to build on your existing research skills to develop advanced critical and analytical competence so that you consistently apply current research evidence in practice.
