Course Description

MSc (Eng) Transport Planning and Engineering This course is particularly suited to students who wish to extend their engineering capabilities into the transportation sector, having studied a civil engineering or related undergraduate degree. The course focuses on engineering solutions to transport issues, particularly how the design of systems determines the nature of how people and goods are transported. Students learn how to use engineering to meet the challenges of integrating different modes of transport and make travel safer, greener and more efficient. The course is approved as ?further learning? for holders of accredited degrees seeking Chartered (CEng) status via the Institution of Highways & Transportation (IHT) or the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Students learn to: - design for safety, efficiency and the environment - apply design standards to roads and junctions - appreciate the needs of different users in transport management - use models to plan networks and predict demand - plan road construction and infrastructure projects - analyse human interaction with transport design. - align engineering solutions with transport policy. Modules: * Principles of Transport Engineering * Transport Data Collection and Analysis * Principles of Transport Modelling * Transport Planning and Policy * Optional modules chosen from a wide range of specialist topics, such as Traffic Management, Road Geometry & Infrastructure, Traffic Network Modelling, Deterioration & Maintenance of Pavements * Research-based dissertation Careers: Transport consultancies are one of the largest employers of ITS graduates but other destinations include transport operators, local and central government, regulatory bodies, charities, campaign groups, national and international agencies.
