Course Description

This advanced inter-disciplinary postgraduate programme, provided jointly by the Schools of Management (SoM) and the School of Computer Science and Information Systems (SCS&IS), is centred on a supervised research project. It also comprises four taught half modules two on research methodologies (one for information systemscomputer science and the other for the research of management.) Apart from receiving a thorough grounding in two disparate research domains students will also gain an in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of particular areas highly pertinent to the dynamic reconfigurations being driven by information and knowledge technologies in 21st century organisations and markets. Depending on the selection of modules from the rich offerings of the advanced Masters units of the SoM and the SCS&IS participants may study approaches, methods tools and techniques that they will be able to use for innovation and change in organisations and markets, problem analysis, evaluation and application of technologies, and research into new technologies. They will also gain the necessary foundations for continuing onto an MPhilPhD degree. Attendance In part-time mode two evenings a week October-September. Full-time students are likely to use College facilities throughout weekdays for a full year. Programme Content Full-time students undertake a one-year supervised research project, and also take 2 research methods half modules and a further 2 taught half modules focusing on the following areas: ? Information Management ? Innovation and Change Management ? Information Systems Development ? Advanced Computing Techniques Part-time students undertake the research project and 4 taught modules over two years. Students select modules appropriate to their chosen research area. Special Features Students will have the opportunity to undertake their research within ongoing research projects in the Schools. At the end of their period of study, students will give a seminar on their research project in addition to submitting a written thesis. Several of the taught modules will include guided study of the research literature, including seminars and tutorial discussions. Modules Two compulsory modules ? Research Methods in Information Systems ? Research Methods in Management Two modules are chosen from: ? Advances in Data Management ? Component-Based Software Development ? Computational Intelligence and Visualisation ? Data Warehousing and Data Mining ? Developing Internet Applications ? Image-Based Information Processing ? Knowledge Representation and Reasoning ? World Wide Web Technologies ? Innovation Management & Policy ? Innovation, Networks and Social Capital ? Principles of Organization & Management or ? one other module from the advanced offerings of the SoM or SCS&IS PG offerings consonant with the objectives of the programme as agreed by the Programme Director Note that some of the above modules may not be offered every year or at all depending on demand. Assessment Students are required to submit coursework during the programme. Assessment is by the research project, written examinations, and coursework. Computing Facilities Students have access to computing labs in the School with platforms including Unix, Windows and Linux. A wide range of software is available including the programming languages C++, C#, C, Java,and AspectJ database management systems: Oracle, SQLserver, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and many other packages for systems design, office productivity and web-page design. The College provides a dial-up facility which supports an Internet connection via a telephone line and a modem. The computing facilities are available to students on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week.
