Masters Degree , Entomology

Course Description

Are you interested in a research career in entomology? If so this is the course for you. There is no other course in the UK that gives you the opportunity to specialise in entomological research at this level. This research-based course provides students with an understanding of the basic and applied aspects of entomological research. The course can be based at either the Silwood Park campus or the South Kensington campus or can be split between the two. Both campuses, with their large, research-active faculty, 'state-of-the-art' facilities, and wide links to academic researchers and entomological and ecological professionals in the UK and abroad, are very well provided to offer the course. The course comprises a comprehensive lecture and seminar series with two 19-week research projects. It equips science graduates with the necessary skills to proceed to a PhD and an established career in entomology or related areas e.g. insect conservation, crop protection or the agrochemical industry. Workshops and seminars in transferable skills are organised by the Graduate School of Life Sciences and Medicine. Core modules (compulsory) A series of lectures covering the principles of various aspects of entomology will be offered including: Biology and systematics of insects and mites of economic importance Insect Diversity and Evolution Optional courses - Decision Tools and Ecology and Practical Taxonomy Dissertationsprojects (compulsory) Each student will complete two ~20 week research projects during the year. The projects, drawn broadly from the areas of entomology covered by Imperial and affiliated research groups, are designed to give practical experience of laboratory andor field-based research as well as opportunities to learn a wide range of skills.
