Course Description

If you are a dental graduate who wants to pursue a career in prosthodontics, this programme is for you. The Professional Doctorate Programme in Prosthodontics provides an integrated 3 years training for dentists who aspire to be specialists, either in primary or secondary services, or clinical academics of the future. The DClinDent Degree integrates academic activities with clinical practice and research up to level 8 of FHEQ and covers all the topics in the GDC(UK) Specialist Curriculum.  The degree is full-time and will provide a sound basis for developing an academic career and for preparing for a career as a specialist in the discipline of Prosthodontics. Completion of this programme can lead to Membership in Prosthodontics of The Royal College of Surgeons.

This programme will:

  • Familiarise you with up-to-date, novel and evidence based clinical practice in prosthodontics
  • Give you hands-on training in fixed and removable prosthodontics and implant dentistry
  • Allow you to participate in new patient diagnostic clinics
  • Provide research training to professional doctorate level.

Course Content

The DClinDent in Prosthodontics is currently available to study full-time for three years.
The aim of the DClinDent programme is to extend knowledge and skills in Prosthodontics beyond the level obtained as an undergraduate and to prepare the candidate for a professional career as a specialist in that discipline.

The components of the programme are designed to accomplish this aim:

• A programme of seminars, practical classes and other didactic sessions commencing with an introductory course and reviewing the clinical and scientific scope of the subject to determine its evidence base
• Supervised clinical and as appropriate laboratory practice in which treatment planning and clinical procedures are performed for selected cases, including a number of complex treatments
• Work based learning, clinical audit / service evaluation project as to evaluate clinical practices
• A research investigation leading to a dissertation in which the candidate is required to demonstrate the application of scientific method to a problem of relevance to the subject area

Full-time

Undertaking a professional doctorate programme is a serious commitment, with weekly contact hours being in addition to numerous hours of independent learning and research needed to progress at the required level. When coursework or examination deadlines are approaching independent learning hours may need to increase significantly. Please contact the course convenor for precise information on the number of contact hours per week for this programme.

In addition to your studies, you have a chance to interact with external specialists, through an extensive seminar series held within the Institute of Dentistry, the Blizard Institute and Queen Mary as a whole..

 

Entry Requirements

You should have a primary qualification in Dentistry - BDS or equivalent, plus two years full-time (or equivalent) post qualification clinical practice of dentistry, including evidence that you have specific relevant experience in Prosthodontic care.

Assessment Methods

Each module is assessed separately, including essays, written, clinical and viva voice examinations.
