Masters Degree , Architecture

Course Description

The two-year Master of Architecture programmes are advanced, graduate-level degrees. They encompass the last two years of study for students on the architecture programme at Edinburgh University, but they are also major points of entry for new students into the school. Concentrating on the relationship between architecture and urbanism, MArch (Design), (Studies), (Digital Media) and (Digital Media Studies) are challenging and dynamic programmes in which students work closely with tutors and other respondents in the formulation and development of their projects. Within this framework the course focuses intensely on: - The relationship between design and our reading and understanding of context - The theoretical foundations on which design excellence is built - The role played by technical aspects in making architecture - The professional ethos that promotes and enables good design The MArch programme is based around a particular (non-UK) city each year (last year's MArch 1 worked on Cadiz, this year it's Warsaw, next year it's Florence). Over the course of the programme, students work through a series of project stages that together build into a complex thesis project. Students work within a general locational and thematic framework, but the course maintains a flexibility and openness that allows them to develop projects driven by their own interests and commitments. The pedagogic intention in this programme is not to isolate architecture into little packages of specialist knowledges, but to try to hold together its full complexity. There are four possible Master of Architecture degrees available as follows: 1. MArch (Design) ARBRIBA Part 2 The professionally accredited route and is aimed at students who wish to become architects. It carries exemption from ARB and RIBA Part 2 and is designed to address the key areas of the ARB and RIBA criteria namely: Design, Technology & Environment, Cultural Context, Communication, Management, Practice and Law. 2. MArch (Studies) Students on the MArch (Studies) follow exactly the same programme structure as the MArch (Design) but have different entrance qualifications. This degree is not accredited as it is aimed at overseas students, or those from Universities who do not award ARB Part 1. Candidates can transfer to the MArch (Design) route if they pass ARB Part 1 by interview at the ARB in London. 3. MArch (Digital Media) Students on the MArch (Digital Media) follow a similar programme structure as the MArch (Design) but with an opportunity to develop specialism in Digital Media. The MArch (Digital Media) is prescribed for ARB Part 2. 4. MArch (Digital Media Studies) Students on the MArch (Digital Media Studies) follow exactly the same programme structure as the MArch (Digital Media) but have different entrance qualifications. This degree is not accredited as it is aimed at overseas students, or those from Universities who do not hold ARB Part 1. Candidates can transfer to the MArch (Digital Media) route if they pass ARB Part 1 by interview at the ARB in London.
