The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The Department of Language and Linguistics is one of the largest and most prestigious departments of its kind in the world, rated as producing the highest proportion of ?world-leading? linguistics research of any university in the UK in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008). Comprising 24 academic staff, we offer teaching and research supervision in: language acquisition, language learning and language teaching culture and communication psycholinguistics language disorders sociolinguistics and theoretical and descriptive linguistics. This course provides a foundation in the sociolinguistics and language variation of Arabic and should interest you if you plan to pursue a doctorate by research on topics in Arabic linguistics, as we provide you with the necessary grounding in the external and internal histories of the language. You will learn the theoretical and analytical tools to evaluate and understand current issues in Arabic sociolinguistics, and be prepared to undertake original research. You gain first-hand experience of data collection and training in methods of analysis. Our core modules include those focusing on sociolinguistic theory and sociolinguistic methods, and variation in Arabic and the sociolinguistics of Arabic-speaking communities.
