Course Description
AIMS Interrogating the fabric of twentieth- and twenty-first- century culture, this programme gives you the chance to develop your expertise in the analysis of the literature of the period while deepening your understanding of the key conceptual and theoretical dynamics that have shaped our world. Suitable for students who want to develop the skills needed to pursue careers in the creative industries, education, management or publishing, this programme will also give you an excellent foundation for PhD research. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION You take two compulsory modules in modern and contemporary cultures (40 credits). These modules are designed to develop your critical understanding of modernity, modernism, postmodernity and contemporary culture. You also choose four optional modules (40 credits) that enable you to undertake more sustained, specialised study of specific texts (literary, film, popular culture) in terms linked to the concerns raised in the compulsory modules. Typical optional modules include: violence and the postcolonial imagination war, memory and culture in the twentieth century Los Angeles fictions inventing cinema and history and sexuality in twentieth-century women?s writing. The choice of optional modules reflects the research specialisms of staff in the School and allows you to follow a general pathway or to specialise in either film studies, American literature, or postcolonialism and global culture. The programme includes training in research skills and academic writing (40 credits). This prepares you for the dissertation (60 credits), which allows you to pursue a subject of your choice and gives you the chance to develop expert knowledge in a particular field.
