Course Description

This programme provides a sound historical and theoretical introduction to maritime archaeology through lectures, seminars, site visits and practical experience. Individual units will familiarise students with archaeological investigationsand the interpretation and management of maritime heritage sites while emphasising interdisciplinary approaches and current debate. Collectively, course and fieldwork provides a basis for you to pursue a professional career in maritime archaeology and heritage or to continue at PhD level. The University is within walking distance of the Floating Harbour at Bristol, one of England's most historic ports. The city rose to international prominence during the medieval period, and was a key location in the development of the Atlantic world during the 17th and 19th centuries. Beyond Bristol, the harbours, wrecks, preserved ships and maritime museums of south west England provide a rich focus for teaching and field experience, from the prehistoric and Romano-British periods through to the 20th century. Programme Structure You must obtain 180 credit points, of which 120 are from five compulsory taught units and 60 from a dissertation. All units are assessed through coursework comprising essays, student seminarsshort presentations and the dissertation of about 15,000 words. There are no examinations. Teaching finishes in AprilMay allowing time for research and dissertation writing. First Semester * Unit : Materialities * Unit 2: Maritime Archaeology Second Semester * Unit 3: Shipping in the Early Modern World * Unit 4: Maritime Cultures * Unit 5: Conservation and Management of Military and Maritime Heritage Dissertation This is submitted in September for full time students (end of October of second year for part time students).
