Course Description
The Department of Theology and Religion offers four taught MA programmes and a Graduate Diploma in Theology and Religion. The four MA programmes are in Biblical Studies Christian Theology Religion and Society and in Theology and Religion. The MA in Christian Theology allows you to specialize in either Anglican or Catholic Studies. Each of the MA programmes involves five modules: a module in research methods three optional modules and a dissertation of 12-15,000 words, which is the outcome of your own research, and which contributes twice as much as any other module to your final result. Although the taught MA programmes are self-contained they are designed to serve as foundation programmes for higher research degrees. All programmes can be taken either full-time over 12 months or part-time over 24 months. MA in Biblical Studies Optional modules for 2008-09 include: Advanced Hebrew Texts Advanced Aramaic and Syriac The Septuagint The Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament The New Testament and the Social Sciences The Gospel of Mark (in Greek) Paul and His Interpreters Theological Interpretation of Scripture The Bible in the Cinema. MA in Christian Theology Optional modules for 2008-09 include: Theological Anthropology of the Fathers Transformative Listening Christian Northumbria 600-800 Worship and Reform in Britain 1530-62 Liturgy and Sacramentality Conceiving Change in Contemporary Catholicism Twentieth-Century Catholic Theology Principles of Theological Ethics Theology, Ethics and Medicine Christian Gender. MA in Christian Theology (Anglican Studies) Optional modules for 2008-09 include: Worship and Reform in Britain 1530-62 Liturgy and Sacramentality Ritual, Symbolism and Belief in the Anthropology of Religion Literature and Religion. MA in Theology and Religion This general degree allows students who do not wish to specialize to choose modules from any of the above MA programmes.
