Richmond, The American International University in London
Masters Degree , Applied Linguistics
Course Description
Would you like to have a career teaching English or Chinese? Then find out more about this programme which is available to students with or without language teaching experience. Gain insights into the theory and practice of language learning and teaching, and develop your teaching skills, extending your career options on an international scale.
As with our other programmes at Richmond, you’ll be able to study one programme and gain two degrees, one from the UK and one from the US.
This MA programme combines both theory and practical skills and begins in the first semester with a course on the principles of teaching a language. You’ll also consider how to design a teaching course, develop it and then consider different methods of assessment for students. You’ll then go on to look at how to teach English and Chinese specifically.
In the second semester, you’ll examine a diverse range of subjects including Language Policies, Markets and Technologies (including the social, economic and environmental implications of language); Research in Language Learning and Pedagogy, looking at the methods and activities of teaching.
In the final semester you’ll have the opportunity to do a research project, with or without an accredited internship, both of which will enable you to use the knowledge and skills learned on the programme.
Those students who focus on teaching English do not need to know Chinese, but if you’re interested in teaching Chinese you must know English which is required for entering the programme at the University.
