Course Description

Overview This challenging course has a unique teaching and learning framework, providing you with the creative opportunity to develop a singular vision as an illustrator or animator. The course is designed and structured for ambitious and determined individuals who have the talent, motivation, urgency and desire to create new work, to form new directions and realise their career aspirations as illustrators or animators and to engage successfully in commercial practice after graduation. Specialisms include Animation ? moving image, printmaking, digital imaging, advanced drawing skills and illustration as an applied art form. The course accentuates and promotes a strong narrative culture within moving image and publishing fields which encourages experimentation and innovation within all aspects of image making for design. This is underpinned by the fundamental discipline of drawing related to all avenues of research and creative development. Teaching and Resources The MA Illustration and Animation pathways offer great opportunities for all students to further their skills and creative potential. Students are taught by highly experienced professional illustrators or animators to write their own individual project briefs within the guiding framework of the modules that form the course. There is no over-arching house style to which work must conform every graduating MA student produces work that is very diverse and original. Students are expected and are encouraged to strive for excellence and to determine clear perceptions of the needs of industry to develop an entrepreneurial sense in marketing and promoting their work. Facilities include: Mac Computer Room: Photoshop, Quark, Illustrator, Flash Printmaking: relief and intaglio, photographic based imaging Photography: general and studio photography inductions, digitised printing Whitespace Film Studio: animation programmes, animo, toon boom, 2D packages Editing Programmes: media 100, final cut PRO Compositing Programmes: After Effects, Combustion, 3D Animation, 3D Studio MAX General Workshop: wood and metal toolshop. Studio Practice ? Dedicated studio space ? Drawing practice liferoom and location ? Weekly tutorials group seminars, critiques ? History of Illustration lectures, including contemporary practice ? Filmography History of Animation lectures ? Professional Practice, business studies seminars ? Interdisciplinary seminars, research theory strategies ? Fully equipped Film animationstudio ? School of Music collaboration: original music arrangements for film animation ? Field study trips abroad ? Computer software workshops inductions ? Unique library resource, all design disciplines, internet site. Entry Requirements ? Applicants should have a good BA(Hons) degree or its equivalent in Illustration or Animation or a related subject such as Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography, Printmaking, Fashion or Textiles ? All shortlisted candidates will be asked to attend for an interview, bringing with them their portfolio ? Please send a portfolio of slides or CDs or video compilation and 2 references along with your application ? We also ask that you submit two passport photographs. Assessment The four studio modules are marked at their conclusion. The marking panel consists of two senior lecturers and the course leader. The final major project is given the most marks and carries the greatest weight at the final assessment.
