Course Description
A global medium from its beginnings at the end of the nineteenth century, film unites a plethora of skills and disciplines in different cultures worldwide. To support the study of film at Masters level, the MA Film Studies is built around a foundational study of world cinema and the development of individual research skills and competencies relevant to audiovisual media. The Department of Dance, Film and Theatre offers particular expertise in documentary film history and theory with a departmental research group focusing on representations of the real in film and related media. It also offers expertise in East and Southeast Asian cinema, South American cinema, and European cinema. Through collaboration with the Department of Music and Sound Recording and the Department of Languages and Translation, the programme can also offer students expertise in screen music and various forms of screen translation. If you come to Surrey to study for the MA Film Studies you will be offered a number of pathways reflecting the multifaceted and crosscultural nature of the medium. The Department of Dance, Film and Theatre has a friendly and lively atmosphere. We believe that a Masters programme should introduce the most exciting ideas and practices of the moment. It should welcome students from across the world and enable them to speak back to that world: through practices, ideas, their professions and lives. Dance, film and theatre at Surrey are closely related. We invite our students to find their own way through these disciplines that both intersect and follow their own path.
