Course Description
Cultural planning is the strategic use of cultural resources for the integrated development of communities at local, regional and national level. The course is aimed at Arts and Cultural Managers, Administrators, Researchers, Practitioners, Managers, Planners and Policy-makers working both in the UK and overseas in the fields of the arts, heritage, leisure, place marketing, tourism, sports, media, economic development, architecture, landscape design and urban and regional planning. The course has a strong international orientation. It primarily focuses on Europe but also includes case studies from other continents. The academic team have extensive contacts with organisations including UNESC0, the EU, the Council of Europe, universities and local and regional authorities in most European countries, and also in Japan, Australia, North and Latin America. Modules Research methods in cultural planning & policy Provides an introduction to the research resources, traditions and disciplines, in the humanities and social sciences which are relevant to the study of cultural planning and policy. Cultural policy: political and theoretical frameworks The module identifies and discusses the main rationales, theoretical underpinnings and institutional structures for cultural policy-making in the UK and other European countries. Urban & regional planning & regeneration Critically examines the context and the main issues, procedures and agencies related to urban and regional planning and regeneration in the UK from a European comparative perspective. Cultural planning The module discusses the theory, and the existing and potential practical implications of the concepts of cultural planning, cultural mapping, and cultural resources. Dissertation Enables you to pursue specialist interests, through the investigation of a specific area of cultural planning and policy. Future opportunities Demand for trained cultural planners, with an international orientation, is increasing. There is an emerging consensus, encompassing local and regional authorities, national governments, the Council of Europe and the European Commission, on the potential positive impact of cultural policies to improve the images of places attract investors, tourists, and skilled personnel enhance quality of life and the well being of individuals and groups, and develop social capital. You are encouraged to develop entrepreneurial projects through negotiated essays and a dissertation, and by making contact with guest speakers from industry and other experts. The course also offers excellent preparation for undertaking studies leading to a PhD.
