Course Description

This course prepares you for a career as a Cinematographer, Director of Photography (DOP), camera person across all screen industries. Cinematography is about understanding how to use camera and lighting techniques to tell a story, whether screened at the cinema, on TV, or through a smartphone. Our MA Cinematography course instils an understanding of the essential links between story and image and the relationship between cinematographers, directors and crews.

  • One-year full-time postgraduate programme
  • For students who want to explore what it takes to be a professional cinematographer in today’s creative industries
  • Studying at the world-renowned Ealing Studios provides a dynamic environment for students with its historic role within the UKs film and television industries as well as its leading role in new media technologies housed in its Imaginarium Studios
  • Create an impressive portfolio which includes a short filmed project, 35mm still life/portrait exercise, collaborative Greenscreen exercise, several shooting exercises including location, studio interiors and night exterior, advanced filmed exercise working with a professional director and a final Masters Project for film, TV or online media.

Course Content

  • Induction Lab. You will participate in seminars and workshops covering a range of topics, including practical filmmaking skills, creative brainstorming, a survey of concepts underpinning moving image theory, and the state of the creative industries. At the end of the module you will shoot a mini filmed project on an iPhone/Android, focusing on the primacy of content in the Say Something! exercise.
  • Cinematography Boot Camp. The module covers the fundamentals of camera movement, lighting, exposure control, depth of field, and lighting for different media as they relate to the cinematographer’s role within the creative team.
  • The Mechanics of Cinematography. You will study the mechanics of practical lighting and camera movement. At the end of the module you will participate in a shooting exercise to explore how the use of camera style contributes to the narrative of the short film form.
  • Commercial Cinematography. You will investigate some of the specialised areas of filmmaking, including CGI, experimental or underwater cinematography. You will experiment with film as an art form, stretching your creative and technical skills towards a more personal style. During this module, you will have the opportunity to work on an Industry Project with an external client.
  • Crafting Narrative Through Cinematography. You will explore how to craft narrative through Cinematography.
  • Research and Project Methods. You will begin to prepare for your final Master’s Project by exploring key research methods including: defining problems, identifying areas of academic enquiry, formulating hypotheses, collecting, organising and evaluating data; developing and assessing conclusions. This enquiry could be in the form of a visual portfolio with mood boards, location details, and other filmic references to demonstrate the value of preconceiving visual work.
  • Master’s Project. This is a largely self-directed module during which you will work under the guidance of a faculty advisor towards the completion of a short film project for which you assume the role of cinematographer.
