Course Description
Employment law is a highly marketable specialism within the field, both for lawyers and for professionals from corporate functions such as human resource management. This LLM provides an in depth coverage of recruitment, termination and discrimination law with options in EU law, corporate governance and responsibility and international human rights. The Law Department has two professors of Employment Law with national reputations who lead this course. Special Features ? Students engage actively and participate in various hands on exercises and activities, working closely with teaching staff and tutors. ? Students have opportunities to focus on issues of particular interest to them both in the taught modules and through an extended dissertation. Course Content The programme has been designed to offer flexibility to students to enable you to advance your knowledge in this specific field. Students study Recruitment and Termination Law and Discrimination and the Law. Optional modules include Issues in EU Law, Corporate Governance and Corporate Responsibility and International Human Rights. Research Expertise Staff teaching Employment Law all have doctorates andor appropriate professional qualifications. The Law Department has a growing reputation for its high level academic research and members of the department have written numerous academic books and articles and have presented at conferences on an international basis. A selection of the departments specific research interests and expertise include: Employment and Discrimination Law Employer PoliciesProcedures on Confidential Reporting Disciplinary Procedures and Remedies for Unfair Dismissal. Assessment Your knowledge and understanding will be assessed through coursework, class participation, oral presentations and a dissertation. Ways of studying the course The course is available as: ? The postgraduate certificate (two 30-credit modules studied on a part-time basis) ? The postgraduate diploma (four 30-credit modules studied full or part-time) ? The LLM (four 30-credit modules studied full or part-time plus a dissertation) ? You will also be able to sign up for single modules if this suits your needs, and then progress onto a higher qualification. Modules Compulsory: ? Discrimination and the Law You will develop an understanding of anti-discrimination law in relation to gender, race, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age. The relevant laws and regulations will be introduced, as will the practical, social and philosophical context in which these operate. In particular, you will pay attention to the limitations of laws in these areas. You will explore important concepts such as the meaning of direct and indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation. You will be familiar with active measures to promote equal opportunities and demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of at least one specific aspect of the syllabus. ? Recruitment and Termination Law The module will provide you with an understanding of the way in which the law of contract is applied to the employment relationship. You will assess the practical impact of statutory rights on the operation of the contract of employment. You will understand the manner in which the employment relationship can be terminated and develop an awareness of how the law affects workplace rules and procedures relating to the termination of employment.
