Masters Degree , Public International Law
Course Description
International law regulates almost every aspect of state law, practice and relations – from human rights, peacekeeping and anti-terrorism to world trade deals, foreign investment arbitration and territorial disputes – with the aim of creating legal norms and strategies to address global societal, political, environmental and economic problems.
Law has been taught at Coventry University for nearly 50 years and enjoys high levels of student satisfaction. You may have the opportunity to network with a wide range of practitioners from well-known organisations, like Weightmans Solicitors, a top 45 UK law firm, The Commonwealth Secretariat or No 36 Bedford Row Chambers (London), one of the foremost family law barristers’ chambers in the country, to name a few and undertake research-based assignments responding to a range of contemporary issues.
Course Content
- Year one
Overview
In the first two semesters, you will study five specialist modules, covering topics ranging from International Human Rights to the Law of Diplomatic Relations
We will begin by exploring the competing theoretical perspectives on corporate crime, its beginnings, definition, context and control. We compare corporate liability under English law and in other jurisdictions, considering the implications of cross-jurisdictional offending by corporations.
We draw heavily on real-life case studies, such as Tesco Supermarkets Ltd v Nattrass [1972] AC 153. In this case, Tesco had been offering a discount on washing powder, which was advertised on posters displayed in stores, however, once they ran out of the lower priced product, the stores began to replace it with the regularly priced stock. The manager failed to take the signs down and a customer was charged at the higher price. Tesco was charged under the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 for falsely advertising the price of washing powder, but the House of Lords accepted its defence that the company had taken all reasonable precautions and all due diligence and that the conduct of the manager could not attach liability to the corporation because the manager was not part of the "directing mind" of the corporation.
In the final semester, you will be given the opportunity to complete a dissertation in an approved related topic. Past students have covered exciting and varied subject matter, such as the efficacy of the Identification Doctrine in holding corporations criminally liable for the acts and omissions of employees and whether criminal fault can arise from corporate culture.
This course includes the Professional Development Module. Each of the participating postgraduate courses have an individually tailored version of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Professional Development module.
