Course Description

AS MATHEMATICS Mathematics is the application of a limited number of methods to a never-ending number of problems. It can be used to solve many practical problems in a variety of areas such as architecture, business and science. This course covers a mixture of pure mathematics, and mechanics or decision or statistics. Length of Course One year AS / two year AGCE. What qualifications do I need to study on the course? Five grade Cs or above at GCSE including a grade B in GCSE Maths. What will I study? This is an excellent course to take for all future career intentions as you will be required to use logical thought and precise working. You will study three modules that build on the maths that you studied at GCSE. Two of the three modules consolidate and extend your use of algebra, whilst the third module offers a choice of studying Mechanics, Statistics or Decision. Method of assessment You will sit three exams in each year - one in January and two in June. What will I be able to progress to? An AGCE in Mathematics is essential for a degree in mathematics, physics and engineering and recommended for computing. If you are considering a degree in the above subjects at a highly competitive university you are also strongly advised to study further mathematics to at least AS-level.
