Course Description

The course is designed to give students a thorough understanding of the core elements of a systemic approach to working with children, couples and families, including theory, practice, the self of the practitioner and the therapeutic relationship. Students are taught how to apply these core elements of systemic practice to specific working environments. A critical understanding of theory and practice in the light of differences in race, class, gender, sexuality and ability to encourage an anti-discriminatory approach to ways of working is fostered. The teaching of this course encourages participants to reflect on and learn about their own responses and reactions in utilising a systemic andor child-focused perspective in order to develop a self-reflexive element to their practice. The course gives students an awareness of other related models of working with children, couples and families and encourages consideration of how these can usefully influence a systemic approach. It is accredited as a foundation level course by the Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice (AFT). This interdisciplinary course forms the first year of the 4 year training programme in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy, with the Postgraduate Certificate in Systemic Practice (Families & Couples or Child-Focused) (Year 2) and the MSc Family and Systemic Psychotherapy (Years 3-4). These programmes are provided in collaboration with the Institute of Family Therapy. Graduates of the four year training programme are qualified to apply for registration with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. Families and Couples stream: This stream aims to familiarise you with a systems approach to working with couples and families, the principles underlying this and the main approaches used in systemic practice. The inclusion of a wide range of approaches is an important characteristic of this course.
