Course Description

Science GCSE (Single) School: School of Lifelong Learning Attendance Type: Evening Course Level: Level 2 Qualification: GCSEs Summary: GCSE Science (single subject award) is offered as a one-year evening course. You will spend 2 hours per week in class. You will need to spend a minimum of 4 hours each week on your own studies and also on homework which will be set by your lecturer. You will need to purchase a textbook (you will be advised as to which one at the start of the course) and also have a suitable scientific calculator. The course is split equally between Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Course Length: One year Full Description: Topics include: The Environment Genes Hormones and Nerves The Immune System Patterns in Properties Making Changes Only one Earth Designer Products Producing and Measuring Electricity Controlling Energy Waves Space and its mysteries As well as the science content of these topics, you will also think about 'what science is' and 'how science is done'. The topics in the new syllabus are all chosen to give students an understanding of science in the world around them, so it always seems relevant and something to do with their lives. The course is intended for those entering teacher training courses or those requiring this qualification for career progression or entry to Higher Education. There is a lot of practical work, so you will need to enjoy doing experiments on your own and in small groups. You need to be ready to write, calculate, think and join in discussions.
