GCE A/AS Level Or Equivalent , Biology

Course Description

AS/A Level Biology Subject area: AS/A Levels (full-time 16-19 yr olds) Course type: Full time Course description The AS and A2 courses provide a range of knowledge and skills that can be applied to a variety of careers. Many topics in the GCSE double science course are addressed in greater depth. Topics studied include genetic fingerprinting, genetic engineering and the ability to clone organisms ?? all of which are very topical at the moment. Teaching is mainly through lessons and practical sessions. ICT and the Internet are also used where appropriate. You will have the opportunity to attend study days and there may be some fieldwork. The course is assessed by modular exams and by coursework (one piece at AS, one at A2 Level). You will be encouraged to develop independence of thought by formulating your own hypothesis, and by taking responsibility for your own studies. This will enable you to develop an understanding of the concepts, principles, relationships and wider application of biology in the world in which you live. Entry requirements To study AS/A levels you will normally need: ? A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above ? It is possible to progress to university without GCSE English Language and Maths at C grade or above, but your options will be reduced if you have not achieved these qualifications and it is likely to impact on your future employment opportunities. We strongly recommend that it you do not have GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C or above that you retake them as part of your A Level programme. Additional information As an A level student you can choose from over 35 A level subjects, vocational awards and GCSE Maths and English. You can choose to study either: 3 ?? 4 A levels OR 2 ?? 3 A levels and a BTEC Award OR 3 ?? 4 A levels and GCSE Maths/English We work in close partnership with local schools which enables us to run minority subjects that have small numbers. It may be that you attend classes in one of our partner institutions. You will have a clear understanding at the interview stage about your timetable and where your lessons occur. A levels are divided into two courses, AS taken in the first year and A2 in the second year; combined together they equal a full A level. Both the AS and A2 courses comprise 2 units. On the whole, A levels are assessed through formal examinations at the end of the AS programme and then again at the end of the A2 programme. In some practically based subjects there is a coursework component. Both AS and A2 qualifications count towards the requirements for university entrance. *Students aged 16-18 will not be required to pay the full course fee, in most cases your fee will not exceed ?150.
