Course Description

What you will study You will study a range of topics over a two year programme that will give you the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to succeed in a career in commercial photography within the creative industries or to progress onto a Bachelor s Degree programme at University. Modules include a Technical and Practical Investigation, Creating an Experimental Portfolio, Skills for Meeting Client Briefs, Building a Professional Portfolio, Photojournalism and Editorial Photography, Photographic Communication in Context, Understanding Client Briefs, and Providing Commercial Solutions to Client Briefs. The Work in Context and Employability in Photography modules are designed to develop different approaches to solving problems across social and cultural divides and how to apply these in a work context. Your Course Structure Level 4 seeks to introduce the underlying concepts and principles that are closely aligned to Photography. Students are offered an opportunity to evaluate these concepts and theories within the broader context of Photography and apply them using research skills, idea generation, and technical and creative applications to solve communication objectives. The students will be given the opportunity to develop important academic writing skills and research practices and use this to support and influence their Photographic outcomes. Level 5 will enable the students to apply new knowledge and understanding and to evaluate and discuss their solutions to more complex problems. The student will work independently in presenting a body of their own Photographic work that shows professional competences. The student will also self-direct and implement a business plan that will enable them to progress into the area of Professional Photography or may seek progression directly onto a BA Top-Up or the final level of an appropriate BSc or BA (Hons) Degree. How you will learn Through a number of module-based assignments, different genres of commercial image making will be introduced as well as what it takes to operate as a commercial photographer. Each module will ask for different aspects of your photographic and business competencies to be developed. Assignments develop your skills and knowledge through lectures, workshops and self-directed study activities.

 

Entry Requirements

College leavers should typically have a minimum of 160 UCAS Tariff Points. Mature students should be able to demonstrate an aptitude for the creative, technical and academic demands of the course. Assessment Methods

The course is assessed throughout the course using a variety of methods including practical portfolios and presentations.
