Course Description
In 1991 the Doctorate of Education programme began in Bristol and was the first taught doctorate outside of North America. We continue to take the lead in innovative and world class research, teaching and learning. Our Doctorate in Education programme has the following aims: ? Excellent doctoral level research is the main aim of the programme. ? Taught units are designed around the specialist knowledge of the unit leaders, who have excellent international research records ? Different facets of the research process and contemporary educational debates are explored in the taught units. ? Courses are designed in a sustainable manner. ? Research methods, theory, argumentation and evaluation skills are developed through the taught units and the dissertation. ? Stimulate and change students? professional thinking and practice. The programme attracts high achieving participants interested in a wide range of aspects of teaching, learning, management and policy. Students recommend studying for a Doctorate in Education at Bristol to their peers because it has helped them to develop deep understanding of real life professional issues. The EdD programme, which carries the same status as a PhD programme, is tailor-made for ambitious, mid-career education and training professionals whose work requires them to have a high level of research capability. It is a structured programme with intensively taught units and coursework with a dissertation. The programme provides candidates with the support which enables them to succeed whilst retaining the flexibility required for mid-career professionals. Candidates study at their own pace with intensive two and a half day units taught in Bristol and Hong Kong. Participants can negotiate progress and follow a general programme outline or one of the specialist pathways: ? Management and Policy ? TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) ? Narrative and Life Story Research. The programme is also offered in Hong Kong in association with SCOPE at City University of Hong Kong.
