Course Description

Suitable for: individuals with: a) a qualification in psychology which confers eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Registration with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and b) appropriate and sufficient experience of working with children (0-19) in education, social services or community settings. Offers knowledge and expertise: for a career as an educational psychologist (EP), via doctorate-level study. Completion of the programme confers Chartered EP status. Additional information: The programme is a three-year, full-time continuous period of study, with trainees spending at least 300 days on practical fieldwork placements in local authority (LA) Educational Psychology Services across all three years. The department is able to offerten funded places, with fee elements and bursaries provided over three years. Trainees are also required to pay fee supplements. The bursary scheme is only available to applicants who permanently reside in the UK and who intend to seek a permanent position as an educational psychologist with a local education authority in England or Wales after successful completion of the course. Programme Description: The aim of the programme is to provide a sound theoretical basis, as well as the requisite skills in applying psychology, to equip trainees to perform the role of the educational psychologist. The curriculum covers six themes: Research Methods in Educational Psychology Processes and Methods of Assessment The Psychology of Learning: Managing Change The Psychology of Behaviour: Managing Change Understanding and Working with Groups: Managing Change and the Role of the Educational Psychologist. Each trainee has two personal tutors and a fieldwork supervisor on each LEA placement. Assessment: In Year 1, there is continuous assessment of theoretical and practical work. In Year 2, as well as continuous assessment of practical work, a small scale research report (with an Ethics Proposal and Reflective Summary) is assessed. In Year 3, there is continuing assessment of practical work and trainees submit a 35,000 ? 45,000-word thesis.
