Course Description

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has grown from a mathematical curiosity to become an essential tool in almost every branch of fluid dynamics, from aerospace propulsion to weather prediction. In design and development, CFD programs are now considered to be standard numerical tools, widely utilised within industry. Offering excellent employment prospects, there is a considerable demand for specialists in the subject, to apply and develop CFD methods throughout engineering companies and research organisations. This course is a research-based Masters level course, supplemented by a series of specialist taught modules in different aspects of computational fluid dynamics. The modules are optional, but highly recommended for all students. The degree awarded is an MSc by Research Available modules include: Fundamental Fluid Dynamics Turbulent Flows Numerical Methods Incompressible Flows Shock Capturing Grid Generation High-performance Computing Validation and Verification. The course is assessed by the submission of a written thesis, followed by a formal viva voce. Candidates are able to select appropriate research topics in discussion with the supervising academic staff. Projects are offered in all aspects of computational fluid dynamics including industrial applications, physical modelling, algorithm development and highperformance cluster and grid computing. The research thesis allows you to further develop your particular area of interest, often providing an opportunity to collaborate on industrially relevant and supported projects.
