Course Description
This course is designed to enable health, social work and other professionals in the child welfare or safeguarding fields to analyse and evaluate the current state of knowledge, UK policy and practice in this area. The course aims to link theory, research and policy. You will consider the nature of child welfare and safeguarding, multidisciplinary approaches and integrated theoretical and practice frameworks. We emphasise anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practice and empowerment. We also take into consideration the agency mandates and your individual learning and practice needs and interests. The content of the teaching assumes a knowledge and understanding of UK policies, procedures and practices. The curriculum includes the management of child welfare and safeguarding, skill development (particularly in the areas of legislation, assessment, planning, intervention and prevention), organisational and policy contexts and the impact of professional roles. Modules include: - The Legal Framework - Assessment and Planning - Child Welfare and Safeguarding: Organisational and Policy Contexts - Interventions in Child Welfare and Safeguarding - Children's Services, Users and Carers - Methods for Inquiry - Dissertation - Plus one 30 credit option module or two 15 credit option modules Learning and teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars and small group discussion. Assessment aims to support learning and to measure achievement through assignments, project proposal and dissertation. Students taking this course normally already hold a professional qualification in some aspect of health and social care practice. Evidence from professionally qualified UK course graduates suggests that achievement of the MA can lead to appointment to specialised positions within child welfare and safeguarding. Part-time students maybe eligible for funding from the Yorkshire and the Humber Strategic Health Authority.
