Course Description
Our sports science with professional football coaching degree focuses on science but dedicates a quarter of its study time to football coaching. As well as exploring the current disciplines in sports science, you'll learn to analyse and evaluate sporting performance in a range of sports and exercise, particularly football. Among the topics you'll study are anatomy, biomechanics, nutrition and psychology, all with a firm focus on sport.
Putting learning into practice is an important aspect of the course, which is why you'll get the opportunity to undertake a structured internship in coaching or sports science at Charlton Athletic Football Club.

Year 1
Students are required to study the following compulsory modules.
- Functional Anatomy & Biomechanics 1 (15 credits)
- Human Physiology (15 credits)
- Physiological Basis of Sport and Exercise Performance (15 credits)
- Research Methods 1 (30 credits)
- Introduction to Sport Psychology (15 credits)
- Introduction to Football Coaching (30 credits)
Year 2
Students are required to study the following compulsory modules.
- Functional Anatomy & Biomechanics 2 (15 credits)
- Sport and Exercise Physiology (15 credits)
- Exercise Testing and Training (15 credits)
- Research Methods 2 (30 credits)
- Sport and Exercise Nutrition (15 credits)
- The Science of Football (15 credits)
- Sport & Exercise Psychology (15 credits)
Year 3
Students are required to study the following compulsory modules.
- Independent Research Project (30 credits)
- Advanced Football Coaching (30 credits)
- Planning for Personal and Professional Development (15 credits)
Students are required to choose 45 credits from this list of options.

Entry Requirements
Typical offer: 96 points
Qualifications: three A-levels / Extended Diploma / combination of A-level and Diploma / A-levels and Extended Certificate.
Subjects:
- A-level: 32 points from biology or related subject, e.g. sports science, physical education, human biology, mathematics or physics
- BTEC National: Extended Diploma in Applied Science
- A-level and BTEC National: Diploma/Extended Certificate in Applied Science and 32 points from A-level biology or related subject (as above)
- Plus GCSEs in English language, mathematics, and one science subject at grade C / 4 or above. We also accept equivalent qualifications at Level 2, such as Functional Skills in mathematics and English.
We will also consider:
- AS-levels along with A2-levels
- Alternative qualifications at Level 3, such as OCR Cambridge Technicals, AQA Tech-level, the International Baccalaureate and Access to Science
- Appropriate qualifications such as an HNC, HND or Foundation Degree, with which you may be able to enter this degree in Year 2 or later
- We recommend that you gain a Level 1 coaching award before starting your degree
- Applications from mature students.
Assessment Methods
Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some courses may also include ‘practice’ assessments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.
