Course Description

Putting people with communication difficulties at ease lies at the heart of this course, but practice and theory are just as important. You'll study psychology, linguistics and phonetics, and gain a critical understanding of communication and other speech and language disorders.

Our degree in speech and language therapy is designed to provide students with the skills they need to successfully start their career. This course is run in collaboration with Canterbury Christ Church University.

  • This course is fully approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which will allow graduates eligibility to register with the HCPC as a speech and language therapist
  •  The curriculum observes the statutory and regulatory requirements of our professional bodies whilst reflecting both national and local requirements through regular contact with local speech and language therapists in practice
  •  Study subjects drawn from a variety of disciplines such as psychology, child development, linguistics and phonetics, anatomy and physiology in addition to speech and language therapy frameworks
  •  Three periods of placements across three years, enabling students to gain practice-based skills alongside experienced speech and language therapists

Course Content

Year 1

Students are required to study the following compulsory modules.

  • Foundations for Practice: Academic & Professional Development (20 credits)
  • Professional Knowledge and Skills 1: Development across the Lifespan (20 credits)
  • Professional Knowledge and Skills 2: Communication and swallowing difficulties across the lifespan (20 credits)
  • Professional Practice Module 1 (20 credits)
  • Holistic and Partnership Working 1 (20 credits)
  • Core Phonetics and Linguistics (20 credits)

Year 2

Students are required to study the following compulsory modules.

  • Holistic and Partnership Working 2 (20 credits)
  • Clinical Process 1: Assessment (20 credits)
  • Clinical Process 2: Intervention (20 credits)
  • Research Approaches in Speech and Language Therapy (20 credits)
  • Professional Practice Module 2 (20 credits)
  • Applied Phonetics and Linguistics (20 credits)

Year 3

Students are required to study the following compulsory modules.

  • Integrated Clinical Reasoning (20 credits)
  • Professional Practice Module 3 (40 credits)
  • Speech and Language Therapy Dissertation (40 credits)
  • Emergent Practitioner Skills (20 credits)

 

Entry Requirements

128 UCAS tariff points from A levels, or equivalent

PLUS a commitment to helping children and adults who have difficulties with communication or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

Applicants who do not have English as their first language must have an IELTS score of 8.0 or above with no score less than 7.5 or an equivalent rating.

On this course, students are assessed by:

  • Examinations
  • Coursework
