Course Description

The BSc Professional Aviation Pilot Practice (Helicopter) is a programme for helicopter pilots delivered through a partnership between the Helicentre Aviation Academy (HAA) and Middlesex University.

This degree gives you the opportunity to gain academic credit and a qualification based on your technical and practical flying training and early career practice.

Helicentre Aviation Academy is a well established Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Approved Helicopter Training Organisation and Commercial Helicopter Operator based at Leicester Airport and specialising in Utility Operations and Commercial Air Transport. The Academy also specialises in placement of selected graduates into flying roles within the company as well as the provision of graduate helicopter pilots to industry. Middlesex University is an international leader in the field of professional practice and university level work-based learning.

The programme has been designed specifically to incorporate all of the CAA regulated training leading to the award of a commercial pilots licence (CPL(H)) and to provide a framework for recognising the learning achieved during the first stages of operational practice. The Honours level (Level 6) programme is tailored to meet the requirements of employment and offers two different routes, including qualification as a helicopter Flight Instructor and so that on completion of the programme you will have a Degree which is highly relevant to your current employment and enhances future career prospects. As a student of this course you'll receive a free electronic textbook for every module.

The principle of work-based learning is to build courses around the working and training practices of particular industries, sectors or employers, so that the learning that occurs every day as part of your normal training and practice can be assessed and recognised in an academic framework without the need for unnecessary duplication. In this way, this degree programme makes it possible, for the first time in the UK, to gain a BSc Honours degree at the same time as completing 'ab initio' pilot training.

Course Content

What will you study on the BSc Professional Aviation Pilot Practice (Helicopter) (Helicentre Aviation Academy)?

At the start of the programme you will join HAA and proceed through Initial training, Ground School and Flying Training. You will be examined in accordance with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations at the appropriate points and awarded academic credit for completion of:

  • The CAA Initial theory, flying to PPL (H) level and CPL (H) Theoretical Knowledge units of study which have been embedded within four Level 4 University modules – Initial Theoretical Aviation Knowledge (Helicopter), Introduction to Helicopter Flying, Flight Operations (Helicopter) and Aircraft and Air Environment (Helicopter)
  • The phases of Flying Training which have been embedded within three Level 5 University modules - Basic Flying 1 (Helicopter), Basic Flying 2 (Helicopter) and Advanced Flying (Helicopter) leading to the issue of your CPL (H) licence

On completion of the CPL (H) course and the issue of your licence you will take the Professional Orientation module, which combines a CRM course with university study. This will complete Level 5 of the programme.

You will then proceed either to the Flight Instructor Course or to employment with an operator, selecting appropriate modules from the Level 6 options to complete your degree programme.

If you elect to progress to the Flight Instructor (FI) course with HAA you will pursue Route A of the degree programme at Level 6. Two university modules encompass the FI course, Flight Instruction (Helicopter) and Flight Instruction Standardisation (Helicopter). Once you are qualified as an instructor you will continue in employment and complete the remaining two University modules, Evaluating and Managing Risks and Threat and Error Management, which relate to your operational practice and employer based training undertaken during the first 6 months of your instructing career.

If, on achievement of your CPL (H), you proceed directly to employment as a helicopter pilot with an operator, you will follow Route B to complete the degree programme. Two modules, Aircraft Specifics (Helicopter) and Airline Orientation and Integration, relate to entry to employment with a specific operator and detailed content of these modules will be determined in consultation with the employing operator. The remaining two University modules, Evaluating and Managing Risks and Threat and Error Management, relate to your operational practice and employer based training undertaken during the first year of your operational flying career.

 

Entry Requirements

The following entry criteria for admission onto the BSc Professional Aviation Pilot Practice (Helicopter) programme incorporates the Helicentre Aviation Academy Training programme entry criteria:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • have at least 2 'A' level passes at grade C or above, or equivalent academic qualifications (equivalent to a minimum of 64 UCAS points)
  • hold a UK issued EASA Class 1 Medical certificate
  • be able to demonstrate the ability to use the English language in accordance with CAP 804 Section 4 Part M FCL .055 will be required

 

Eligibility

UK/EU and International students are eligible to apply for this course.

Applicants who require Tier 4 visas are not eligible for the Aviation programmes as applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK.

Academic credit for previous study or experience

If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another university, you may be able to enter a Middlesex University course in year two or three. For further information please visit our Transfer students page.

Interviews, entrance tests, portfolios and auditions

Candidates who are successfully shortlisted will be invited to attend a formal Assessment Day at Helicentre Aviation Academy premises in Leicester. Entry to the programme is conditional on passing assessment at interview stage.
