Course Description

The Medical Sciences course enables you to gain a full BSc university degree in just two years, which means you'll be a whole year ahead of your peers, an advantage that will kick-start your medical science career.

This course not only offers the chance to graduate a year ahead of your peers, for those interested in other medical science related careers, it creates opportunities to enter the professional job market early.

You could work in areas as diverse as the medical and allied research institutes, health agency laboratories, bioanalytical medical genetics and forensic units, the pharmaceutical industry and health and safety.

You'll graduate with a deep understanding of health and disease, as well as technical and transferable skills in a range of specialist areas.

A typical week involves a minimum 15 hours contact time with academic staff in a variety of forms, including: lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops or practicals. Practicals and projects are conducted in the state-or-the art Science Centre, said to be the largest teaching laboratory in Europe.

The formal title of the course is Medical Sciences BSc (Hons). This is what will be shown on the certificate and transcript.

Year 1 modules include:

Anatomy & Physiology (core, 30 credits)

Biochemistry (core, 15 credits)

Cell & Molecular Biology (core, 30 credits)

Chemistry (for Biosciences) (core, 15 credits)

Fast Forward to Medical School (core, 30 credits)

Fundamentals of Medicinal Chemistry (core, 15 credits)

Infection Science (core, 30 credits)

Blood Science (option, 15 credits)

Year 2 modules include:

Advanced Blood Science (core, 30 credits)

Advanced Infection & Tissue Science (core, 30 credits)

Project (for medical Sciences) (core, 60 credits)

Systems Pathology (core, 15 credits)

Tissue Science (core, 30 credits)

Applied Immunology (option, 15 credits)

Infection Control (option, 15 credits)

Medical Genetics (option, 15 credits)

Virology (option, 15 credits)

 

 

Entry Requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have:

  • a minimum of grades BBB in A levels with B in Biology and B in Chemistry (or 120 UCAS points from an equivalent Level 3 qualification)
  • GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C/grade 4 or above (or equivalent)

If you do not have traditional qualifications or cannot meet the entry requirements for this undergraduate degree, you may still be able to gain entry to the Biomedical Sciences Extended Degree.

To study a degree at London Met, you must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. If you require a Tier 4 student visa you may need to provide the results of a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. If you need (or wish) to improve your English before starting your degree, the University offers a Pre-sessional Academic English course to help you build your confidence and reach the level of English you require.

Assessment Methods

You'll be assessed through a variety of methods, including problem solving exercises, in-class tests, data analysis, practical reports, case studies, extended essays, examinations, research project interim reports, oral examination and dissertation. Practical skills are assessed through coursework assignments, including those in the project module. Data handling skills are assessed by practical reports, problem solving exercises, oral presentations and examinations.

Formative assessments include group activities in tutorial classes, mini-tests and project workshops. You'll also undertake the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) training during the summer of the first year.
